A traditional refrigerator has the freezer on top of the refrigerator. This sometimes causes a problem because some adults can’t reach the freezer.
Another problem is that there is typically only one shelf in the freezer so it is sometimes hard to find things because they become easily buried. Side-by-side
refrigerators are divided in half lengthwise with one half being the freezer and the other half being the refrigerator. Each side has a separate door so the freezer can stay closed when you are looking in the refrigerator.
A side-by-side has many shelves in both the refrigerator section as well as the freezer. These shelves are at various heights and many side-by-sides have adjustable shelves so you can determine what height each shelf is so the set up can work best for you. Some side-by-sides also have shelves that can slide out making it easier to find things that sometimes get hidden at the back of shelves. Side-by-sides give you additional door storage space in both the freezer and the refrigerator. Some even come with larger door storage where a gallon of milk will fit. Side-by-side refrigerators frequently come with an ice and water dispenser in the door.
Another type of refrigerator that is becoming more popular is the French door style refrigerator. This style is similar to the side-by-side but it has two refrigerator compartments on top and has a drawer or door on the bottom that houses the freezer. This is more energy efficient than a traditional refrigerator because you don’t let as much cool air out when looking in the refrigerator.
